Bringing solace and hope to a large number of paraplegic patients, a mosque at Parappanangadi, a town in Kerala, India, has converted itself into a wheelchair-friendly place of worship.
The mosque managers claimed it to be the first of its kind in the country. Come Sunday, the mosque will be thrown open for prayers by giving equal importance to paraplegics destined to remain home because of their physical challenge.
"It’s a wonderful move worth making a model for other places of worship. We will not only be providing facilities for wheelchair-bound persons, but also be instilling fresh hopes in their lives,” said Husain Madavoor, general secretary of the Indian Islahi Movement.
While a few mosques in the State have already set up ramps, the Soft Campus Masjid at Parappanangadi went all out by providing ramps, special facilities for wuzu or ablutions, and special toilets for the physically challenged.
"We have arranged facilities in such a manner that the paraplegics can do everything on their own,” said Mansoor Ali, one of the organizers, the Hindu reported.
Mr. Madavoor said wheelchair-friendly buildings, including places of worship, had become the need of the hour.
"Ramps and related facilities are mandatory in many developed countries. We too have to rise to the need,” he said.
Mr. Madavoor, who visited most States in the country, said there was no other paraplegic-friendly mosque to his knowledge in the country.
The organizers said they were moved by a strong demand by a group of paraplegics led by Rayeez Hidaya of Velimukku.
"Their demand is not to sympathize with them, but to help them move,” said Mr. Ali.
Kerala Nadvathul Mujahideen (KNM) president C.P. Umer Sullami will inaugurate the mosque.
